“Combat Paper” made of Class A army uniform, thread, charcoal
His boots. As much as his blue eyes pierce my memories, I see his boots Those black, molded to his leg, ever polished boots.
While attending an art opening for a friend, I met another group of artists who also happened to be combat veterans. As much as I beamed with pride hearing my friend sharing thoughts about her work, I was moved to tears by the presentation of these men. As therapy to help the wounds of war heal, these men cut up their uniforms to make pulp. The pulp was then drawn into a very special handmade paper known as Combat Paper. On the Combat Paper, they sketched, painted, or screen painted their memories.
I am very fortunate to have been invited to their facilities in Blackburn, NJ to turn My Soldier Boy’s Class A winter wool uniform into multiple sheets of Combat Paper. With thread, I stitched the creases of those boots onto his Combat Paper.
Soldier on, soldier boy! Soldier on!
